The Count of Monte Cristo was produced in 1844. It is the romantic adventure of a prisoner of the Chateau d’If.

The story opens on a cheerful note with Edmond Dantes sailing into port and being made the captain of the Ship Pharaon, much to the regret of Danglars, the accountant on the ship. The fate of the young man changes in between because Danglars and an aspirant for the hand of Mercedes, Fernand join hands. A conspiracy is hatched. Edmond is arrested.

More complications follow. The names of Napoleon Bonaparte and Louis 18 come up, and Edmond Dantes is cast into the dungeons of Chateau d’If, a political prison.

One part of the story ends, and another begins. A new friendship is formed, ‘An Escape’ is dared. We now enjoy a story of courage, bravery, deceit and fraud, revenge and death. Yet the message left behind by The Count of Monte Cristo is one of waiting and hoping for better times to come — and they do come.

Read and enjoy a story with a great message to the young of today.
